There is an old adage that goes, "What gets measured, gets done."  If you want to accomplish something, you must know where you are today, as well as where you want to go.  While the GameTrac Sports app has a number of compelling uses, its original intent was to create a simple method of recording particular stats to analyze and enhance performance.

In competitive games, there is often someone 'keeping the book.'  Such stats are generally focused on helping teams understand strengths and weaknesses.  GameTrac is focused on tracking particular stats for individuals striving to improve performance.

Less performance conscious users have come to enjoy GameTrac's ability to record game results and overall seasonal records while completely ignoring its more sophisticated capabilities.

We predict you will modify your use of GameTrac as you become familiar with it and begin applying it to various games and activities.  Built with flexibility in mind, you will decide what works best for you and customize your own unique application.

In this initial release, we offer a few default sports/games to get you thinking about how you might use the application.  We look forward to hearing your questions and comments in order to continue development.

GETTING STARTED

Adding Players:  Upon opening the application for the first time, you find yourself on the 'Player' page.  In the upper right corner you will see a 'add Player' button.  Touching this will take you directly to your contact list where you will choose WHO you'd like to add.  (You can add as many Players as you'd like.)

Defining Player Profiles:  Now that you've added a Player(s), your next step is to assign them to the sport(s) you'd like to track.  To do this from the 'Players' page, first tap on the Player.  The first time you do this you will automatically be prompted to choose from our default game options.  (For example, my son plays Basketball, Football and Baseball, so I would choose all three of these.)

Here you will also have the option of adding a picture to the players profile by taping on the default image.

Creating Custom Games:  If you do not see the sport your looking for, you can simply create it.  In order to add a sport, you must go to the 'competitor profile' page by touching the arrow just to the  right of the Players name.  In the lower right corner of this page you will see a '+ sport' button.  Tapping on that button will bring you to a page where you will be asked to enter the 'Game' and define the following parameters.

a)  Is Win/Loss applicable?  Not all competitions are recorded as Win/Loss.  I good example would be a track meet with multiple teams.  Or perhaps you will even use the app to track some personal training activities.  However, if this is a sport like basketball, football or baseball, you would keep this toggle at it's default of 'Yes'.

b)  'Stats' is the next piece you may want to define.  Is there an obvious stat you want to track for this game?  Or perhaps there is something your coach has asked you to improve?  You can track and many or as few stats as you like.  Our advice is to track only those things you are genuinely hoping to improve.  If you choose too many, you may find yourself missing the game while to try to catch all the details.  Once you click 'Add new stat type' you will be prompted to chose between the following options:
i.  Average (Avg) - This is really just a basic 'tally'.  For example, in basketball you might want to track 'Steals'.  Each time the athlete steals, you will tap the 'plus' button.
ii.  Percentage (%) - This is for items where 'attempts' vs 'completions' is helpful.  ...shots in basketball, QB pass attempts vs completions, etc.
iii.  Time - The most obvious example might be Track & Field running events.
iv.  Distance - Again, Track & Field events like long jump or discus are good examples.
v.  'Ignoring values of 0 when calculating stats' - This refers again to things like Track & Field where certain events are not performed at every meet and should not be calculated.
vi. 'Larger values are better' - Bigger is not always better!  'Time' stats for instance are usually better when smaller.

c)  Seasons - There are a number of reasons it's important to define seasons.  User must have the ability to track how and where performance improves.  By entering a description of individual seasons; I.E. 'Club Team Sharks, Spring '09 - Smith' it becomes easy to review past history, sort stats my season and track multiple athletes.

d)  Positions - An athletes position within a particular sport can change from season to season, or even from game to game.  We have found it is sometimes essential to capture the position being played as it can effect performance.  (A good example would be the amount of rebounds a Basketball player makes playing Guard vs Forward.)  In other cases, position is irrelevant and can be ignored.

Once all these items have been accounted for, press save in the upper left hand corner and you sport will be created.

Recording a Match:  Now that you have your athlete(s) and sports set up, you are ready to track a 'Match'  Starting from the first screen titled, 'Players' you will 1) Tap the Player you are interested in tracking, 2) Tap the sport they are competing in and 3) Tap '+ Match' in the upper right hand corner.  You will know be looking at the stats you've created with the buttons to track performance.

*Important*  Hitting the '>' symbol to the right of the Athletes name will bring you to a Match profile page where additional details such as 'Match Name', 'Opponent', 'Location', 'Season', 'Position', and Date/Time can be defined.

Sharing Stats During a Game:  When you are in the 'Match' screen, you will see a 'Share' button in the lower left corner of the screen.  Simply tap this button to be offered a choice of Email, Facebook, or Twitter sharing options.

Closing Out a Game:  Once a match is complete, hit the 'Done' button in the upper left hand corner.  If the sport is set as 'Win/Loss Applicable, you will now be prompted with a Win, Lose or Draw option.  Choose whichever applies and then enter the final score and hit 'Done' in the lower right corner.

Viewing Stats:  After a game(s) been recorded you can hit the 'Stats' button at the bottom center of the page.  The more games you enter, the more compelling this feature becomes.  You will notice two buttons at the top of the Players Stat page; 'All Seasons' and 'All Positions'.  By tapping these you will be allowed to further define the 'data range' you wish to review.

Once viewing the stat results, it should be noted that numbers presented in green are higher than average, while numbers below average are presented in red.  Further graph analysis can be seen by tapping again on individual stat categories.  The more data, the more compelling.  Over time, the goal is to begin observing an upward trend!

Deleting a Sport:  Deleting a Sport permanently can only be done by going back to any individuals Player Profile page and choosing 'Edit' in the lower left hand corner.  Once chosen, a delete option will appear next to each sport.  WARNING - Deleting a sport here will erase the sport AND HISTORY for ALL Players.

Deleting a Match:  Deleting an individual match can be done by simply swiping right to left on the specific match and then pressing the 'Delete' button that appears in red.  WARNING - this will permanently delete any Match results that have been entered.

Backing-up your Stats:  You will notice 'Back-up' buttons on the three page types.  1) 'All Players' page will send one backup CSV file with ALL data to any email address you wish.  2) 'Individual Player Profile' page will send back-up of ALL data for THAT Athlete only...as a CSV file to any email address you wish.  3) 'Individual Player Sport' page will send CSV file of data for individual Player in chosen sport ONLY.

Importing stats to an Excel Spreadsheet:  Our hope is to eventually make this an automatic feature supported by a hosted back end that allows for greater security and analysis.  However, until that's a reality, we hope the following steps are easy enough.
  1. Open Excel
  2. From the 'Data' tab, choose 'From Text'
  3. Choose 'Delimited' as the data type and hit 'Next'
  4. Choose 'Comma' as Delimiter type and hit 'Next'
  5. Leave Column data format as 'General' and hit 'Finish'
  6. You will be prompted one last time regarding where you want to put the data.  Make sure you left justify your the cell your cursor is in and hit 'OK'.

Each time you do this you will be importing ALL the data for that given CSV file, so depending on your preferences, you may have to cut and paste a bit or simply overwrite the previous data.
